Cleaning Diamond Jewelry at Home

Everyday wear can dull a diamond. Lotion, perfume, hairspray, and natural body oil can build up on the surface. This level of dirtiness does not necessarily require the help of a jeweler. There are several methods of cleaning that can be done at home. Here are the safest and most popular ways to do so.

Detergent

Pour a small amount of mild dish detergent into a small bowl. Add warm water, and help the detergent form into suds. Place any piece of diamond jewelry into the bowl. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a new toothbrush with soft bristles to gently scrub away dirt and residue. Rinse the jewelry in the soapy water, and repeat as much as necessary to complete the job. Rinse the jewelry in warm water to eliminate the possibility of soapy build-up. Remember to use the sink stopper so that the jewelry doesn't fall down the drain.

Ammonia

Diamonds can handle contact with ammonia, but not all gems can. Be sure to check with a jeweler before using ammonia if the piece of jewelry in question contains other gems as well. To clean a diamond with ammonia, fill a small bowl with one part ammonia and four parts warm water. Glass cleaner that contains ammonia is a good ammonia substitute. Soak the jewelry in that solution for 10 minutes. Use a new toothbrush with soft bristles or a lint-free cloth to scrub away the dirt. Dip the jewelry in this solution periodically while scrubbing to help the dirt break free from the diamond. At the end, rinse the diamond with tap water. This method is usually more effective than simply using detergent, so it is ideal for diamonds that have been neglected for a long time. As a word of caution, never use ammonia on diamonds that contain fracture fillings.

Liquid Diamond Cleaner

There are many types of liquid diamond cleaner on the market. Each cleaner is different, so refer to the product packaging for instructions.

Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner

People who have a lot of diamond jewelry may wish to invest in an ultrasonic cleaner. These machines use detergent, water, and ultrasound waves to create bubbles that bind to dirt. The dirt is removed rather efficiently without anyone having to scrub it. When the machine is finished, simply rinse the jewelry under tap water to get rid of any remaining detergent.

Diamonds may be scrubbed using a small cosmetic brush instead of a soft toothbrush. Always use a new brush or toothbrush, and never use it for cosmetic or dental purposes afterward. Finally, never use a cleaner that contains chlorine or bleach because these chemicals actually weaken diamonds. When in doubt, don't use the chemical in question.

Professional Care for Diamond Jewelry

Most jewelers recommend an annual cleaning, but not all jewelry is worn often enough to warrant this kind of attention. Of course, diamond wedding rings should receive plenty of care because they undergo stress and come into contact with chemicals daily. Since most jewelers are willing to clean and inspect jewelry free of charge, there is no excuse for skipping a needed cleaning. A professional diamond cleaning is much more thorough than an at-home cleaning. Jewelers use high-quality supersonic cleaners or steam cleaners to loosen debris. While this helps diamonds stay brilliant and beautiful, perhaps the most important part of a professional cleaning is that the jeweler gets to take a look at the setting. The jeweler can assess the strength of the setting and determine if any additional care is needed. As far as diamond rings are concerned, it is crucial to make sure that the diamond is safely mounted on the band. Not only would a lost diamond cost a lot of money to replace, but it would also take away from the sentimental value of a diamond wedding ring.

Insurance

Diamonds of any notable value should be insured. A good rule of thumb is to insure any piece of diamond jewelry that would cost more than two weeks of work to replace. Many people wonder why they need to insure a piece of jewelry, but the reality is that loss, theft, and damage can occur even when people diligently care for their jewelry. Since diamonds are so valuable, it's a good idea to insure any jewelry containing diamonds.
